I think that duramax may have more than just a programmer and some one just didn't tell you or show you the rest. Either that or when you say aftermarket, it was like aftermarket replacements from O'rielly's for the dodge. Or just a turbo and intercooler that weren't very far off from stock at all.
Though if any one is in nebraska we can have a diesel show down. I think we have a few in the stable that will suprise you. Also I've got a new project...A 1978 Ford F250, with a Detroit diesel, out of an older GM truck. Not a cummins but different, and cool.

From what I've seen, I think I'd say the Duramax is fastest stock, out-of-the-box, and with a few mods can make some impressive power. But if you're really going all-out, I think the Cummins is the way to go. They can just take a lot of punishment in terms of boost & power. Plus, factor in the inherently greater main-bearing strength and surface area, and I'd have to give the edge to Cummins.

I own a Duramax myself and I also agree that dodge's in most cases are the top dogs. I have a lot of friends that own powerstrokes and cummins and they cant hang with my duramax but they dont have the money in there trucks that I do. As far as holding up I have had to replace more factory parts on my duramax than my dodge friends have also but when you are running the kind of horsepower and torque that I am you run into that problem. So really as far as how well they run and how long they last depends on what you do to them and how you treat them. It is just amazing what diesel's are capable of doing with some bolt on parts and a programmer or two. Last week I smoked a GTO with a procharger and programmer. Now that is AWESOME nomatter what brand you like.

Help! Does anybody have the dry weights of all 3 diesels? I think that the Duramax may be the lightest because of the aluminum heads but I still would like to know the exact weights. I am putting a diesel in my 1963 Ford Galaxie. Any buddy have a clue? I would love to keep it all Ford but that Ford diesel is heavy.
So why would I do this? Some buddy put one in a 65 Impala and with 800 HP and still got 30 MPH. I want that! Those old cars may be heavy but compared to the diesel trucks, they are still considered light.

I think everyone needs to realize that most diesels are made for pulling heavy loads and not racing. If you want to race and have 800 hp then buy a goat or a stang or something. That's what sports cars are made for, hints the word "SPORT".Yea big lifted diesels are great and all but you all are trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip.Personally, i like the duramax, but i do think that everyone should go look at my comment under esanchez's post about who has the better diesel.

Cummins for rodding, Ford for pulling, and duramax is good all around but not the best.

they are only considering the v-8 as it will require more repair, shorten lifespan, etc.. what, don't believe me. look under the hood of most heavy equip and larger trucks and what do you see? INLINE!!! on that.. jeeps were inline (gas), ford made a great 300ci six(gas). i had an 04 DURACRAP and will never go that route again. In the military we used diesel exculsively.. the five tons we used were pre vietnam inline diesels still in use. of course you have NO experience in industrial use diesels do you? I worked for caterpillar after that. and.... straight axle is way stronger the cv. if we took five humvees out in rough terrain at least two would be headed straight to mechanics upon return. broken cv. and those were rated 1 and a quarter ton. gm stands for generically made..
