Do you think GM set the new standard with its GMT-900 trucks? Or do you still think the F-150 is the one to beat? Or, do you think the new Tundra trumps them all?

Overall, the new GM trucks are really nice. But I think they kind of dropped the ball by not offering rear-discs across the board, and still offering the 4.3 V-6 as the base engine. The expiration date on that motor is long overdue! Why not offer the 4200 I-6? Probably 'cause they didn't want it to compete with the 4.8 Vortec, which is very similar in power output. Personally, I think they should have made the 4.8 Vortec the standard engine and put AFM on it. Then they could claim they were the "only domestic fullsize with standard V-8 power."
I know some guys say having rear drums on trucks is actually a much more elegant design, since you can incorporate the parking brake directly into the rear brake mechanism, but it still seems like a cop-out when all the other major full-size trucks have rear discs. I know the new Toyota Tacoma is rear-drum only, but that's in a different class.
Just my $0.02 worth.

You can brow beat GM for still offering a base V-6 engine but we have to remember that these vehicles are still the backbone of a lot of industry in this country. And full size pickups need to offer a wide spectrum of specification based on the needs of their myriad users. Ford offers a wide array of F-150s also but, dare I say it, I think the once class leading rig has been overtaken by Chevy and Toyota. (I don't ever really consider the Titan. If a company can not be bothered to spend an extra $50 a vehicle to make the interior not feel like a plastic-fantastic penalty box, there is little hope with me. It just screams RENT ME like its cousin the Altima.) And between Chevy and Toyota, I think that merely the broad variety of models that Chevy offers makes it superior to the Toyota. As a fully loaded four door, top of the line V8 all the bells and whistles combo, though, I personally would buy the Tundra. And that has nothing to do with technological, engine or brake concerns with the Chevy. I just like the styling of the Tundra more. If I was getting a mid spec working truck, the Chevy would definitely get my dollar.

I think the the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have raised the bar from the last generation quiet a bit. I really like the new exterior and interior designs. There are many options, including the V-Max Silverado and the GMC Sierra Denali plus a ton of options and other configurations to pick from. The GMT900 trucks are tops in my book.
Really the rear drums are the chosen setup over discs by a lot of GM truck enthusiasts I always talk to. Some like the rear disks but I know a lot prefer the drums because they like them a lot better overall.
I've never been a Ford fan but have to say I like the F-150 better than the Tundra. At least the F-150's look decent and aren't fugly looking like the new Tundra's.

All I know is generally discs are a LOT easier to work on than drums. As far as the Tundra goes, there's just one model I'd personally be interested. The short-bed, regular cab with the 5.7. I wish GM would offer the Vortec MAX or 6.2 in that configuration! Now THAT would be one hot truck.

I am a Ford man from the get go and always buy their products I am on my 7th F150 and I was one of the first to buy the F250 superduty here in Calif.. Ordered it from the factory with everything on it, 4x4, crew cab, V-10, long bed and I still sometimes wish I still had it. I put 186,000 miles on it in 18 months and never had a problem with it. My second choice would be the Silverado and I wouldn't drive a Toyota if it was given to me.

Call me a lame Ford guy but I get excited even seeing a rough idea of what the new 2009 F-150 is going to look like. Here is the first, mostly complete shot of the interior. The inside of even the current F150 is just more stylish, more robust and more classic than any of the other full size pickups. The Chevy is nice, just a little plain to me. The Tundra has too many colors of plastic, silver, black, matte, tan, grey....all in one truck!
Now, a 2009 F150 with a 400hp V8 boss motor, awesome new Sync/Microsoft interface and uprated braking system is going to be too much for me to pass up. I am getting so excited...Come on Ford, hit one out of the park! Here is a shot of the interior...

I was pretty impressed with the Sierra Denali. A little expensive, but a nice truck nonetheless. I can't wait for the Duramax 4500 to come out in the half-tons. That sounds like it's going to be one sweet motor.

I can't wait for the 4.5L Baby Duramax either.About time Chevy continued offering a diesel in their 1/2tons like they did in the 80's to mid 90's I believe.

Yeah, I gotta give GM props. Myself and a few others were kind of nit-picky at first about the 4.3 as the base engine and rear-drums, but the rest of the truck is pretty darned impressive.
Duramax 4500 should be a real game-changer from what I've heard. Can't wait 'til it's on the road!

I don't know about 30 mpg, Ben, but 25 on the highway shouldn't be too far-fetched. I'm guessing it'll be capable of about 18/25. Maybe a little higher.

The 30mpg is only with the 2wd option. The 4wd version will get 25 mpg.

GM has pretty nice half tons but you have to look at this way. Right now Toyota is its only real compitision because both were re-designed in the same year, the other trucks are behind because they have been out in the same body style longer. I think that yeah Chevy has nice half tons but I'll take a Dodge or Ford heavy duty.
