General Motors Corp. is cutting the third shift at its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant. GM told workers Monday it will drop the shift after the Thanksgiving holiday at the plant that makes the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave crossover vehicles. The Detroit automaker has regularly touted those models as leading sellers in its crossover segment.
GM spokeswoman Heidi Magyar confirmed the decision, saying as many as 1,000 workers could be affected. Some could be temporary workers. Others could be low-seniority employees. Magyar said the Delta plant will continue to operate two shifts after Thanksgiving. GM had decided to cut the third shift earlier this year, then brought it back around Labor Day.

Who knows if this is a sign of a general slowdown in the market or attributable to rising gas prices. I am sure of one thing, though, the last thing GM needs is to have sales slow down on these once hot selling models. A good incentive program (currently 0% APR for 60 months) like GM implemented on the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups could more than likely turn things around.

You could read it any number of ways. I think it's smart for GM not to over-produce, because all that leads to is excess inventory, more incentives and rebates, and lower profit margins. These crossovers may be like the Cadillac CTS, which had its best year in its 3rd or 4th year of production. Guess we'll have to wait & see.
