The 5.7 liter monster "Hemi" motor from numerous Chrysler products ranging from the Durango to the Ram, is known for many things. Torque. Horsepower. Machismo. The word "Hemi" was made famous again most recently in comedy cirles by its inclusion in the mullet-rich comedy classic "Joe Dirt." But can it be known now as a "Green" engine like the one found in the Prius? Are you kidding me?
Well, that is what Chrysler intends in 2008 when it releases the Hemi Hybrid in its Durango and Aspen models, followed by its inclusion in the 2009 Dodge Ram. My first question is, where the heck are the batteries going to go in the Ram? I know they can go under the rear cargo area of the sport utes a la the Ford Escape. But do they fit under the bed of the Ram?

No more ridiculous than the 6.0L Tahoe Hybrid. I say put 'em out there and let the marketplace decide.

Both concepts are ridiculous, I say. I know that GM claims a 25% percent gain in fuel economy, but I wonder if those claims will be borne out in the real world. I know the Prius and Civic Hybrid were both stung by having elevated fuel economy claims that were not achievable. If these Hybrids can get 25% better fuel economy that is all well and good. But is the difference between 11 mpg and 15 mpg REALLY going to save the world? I don't think so. I am sure people will buy them, but that doesn't tell me it is a valuable technology.

Well, I know when I tested out an Escape Hybrid about a year ago, I got a combined 26 mpg. Not bad, but not the 30+ that's advertised. Granted, I had it pedal to the metal most of the time. I've driven several of the GMT-900 SUVs, and they've gotten between 11 and 15.5 mpg combined. If the Hybrids can consistently maintain a combined average of 20, I'd be impressed. We shall see.
