Be careful what year small-block Mopar you use. I put a mild 318 from the early 70's in my '89 Dakota. The 3.9 V6 and later model V8s have mounting bosses in the block that the early LA V8s do not have. In my case, I had to build a cross-member to mount the engine and run an electric cooling fan ahead of the radiator to make room for sort of a poor-man's Shelby Dakota.

If it is a 3.9L motor, check to see if the bracket near the oil pan is wet. I have an antifreeze problem with my dakota. Could not find a leak anywhere. Unfortunatly, i found the cause. I started feeling around on my block and there is a soft plug underneath the motor mount on the passenger side. Its not an easy fix, which is why i have been putting if off for so long. Hope it helps.

i just did the swap and it was easy. if you know your way around cars than you will understand.  5.2 version is easy you need the wiring harness of the same year and the vin no. flashed into your new v8 pcm. you will also have the put v8 ac lines and the v8 throttle cable. for the 5.9 the only difference is the flywheel for the manual or the torque converter for the automatic the 5.9 needs the weights because its externally balanced.

i have a 2001 ram also with the 3.9 v6. been thinking of doing the same thing, but have a couple of concern doing so. first, do i need to remount the motor mount if i swap in the 5.2 or 5.9 ? i know the 5.2 is essentially the same except it has 2 more cylinder. but i would have to modified the mount right ? anyone know if they sell one of those bolt on swap kit for this engine ? i looked everywhere, they sell it for chevy and some old model dodge.

Should be a real easy swap. The bolt holes for the engine mounts are the exact same between the two engine blocks. No modification necessary. The extra length is on the radiator side of the motor which is currently filled in by a very large fan shroud. Use your exisiting mounts and check that the oil pan will clear the cross member. There are several different OEM oil pans you can use. Just go to the parts counter and ask for an oil pan for a 2001 ram with a 5.9L. If it's the same as what you got on your new motor, your good. You'll need a new fan shroud, PCM, engine wiring harness (might come with your junkyard motor), and a good set of wiring diagrams to make sure the rest of your systems hook up correctly. Oh yeah, don't forget to upgrade to a V-8 tranny. The punny 44RE will bolt up but won't last very long. If you haven't purchased the engine yet, it will save a ton of headaches if you buy one that came out of a 2001 Ram or Dakota.

For those of you who think it's OK to install a Chevy or Ford into a Dakota, just stop it. Don't ruin any more Mopars. Buy a Ranger or an S-10.

IF I REMEMBER RIGHT THE 318 5.2L FOR YOUR YEAR TRUCK WILL NOT ALIGN WITH THE TRANS BUT THE 287 4.7L. THE 318 HAS MORE MODS OUT RIGHT NOW BUT THE 287 IS RELATIVELY NEW SO IT WILL CATCH UP SONE. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I've got an '02 Dakota 3.9 and want to toss in a 5.2 engine and tranny. I was told that because they didnt offer the 5.2 in 2002 that the 5.2's PCM wouldnt work with my truck. It was suggested that I use a 5.9 PCM. The reasoning is that it will work with my truck as the 5.9 was an option in 2002 and that it will apparently run the 5.2 properly.

Any thoughts? I'd appreciate any advice you may have.
