Are mesh/net tailgates legal in california

I have a 76 GMC half ton and I'm considering removing my tailgate so that I can add a mesh/net style tailgate.
Does anyone know if mesh/net tailgates are legal in california?

hmmm i've never thought of this before... why wouldn't they be legal? Have you heard of people gettin' rolled for this?

I have seen maybe one or two trucks around my area but I've never had a chance to ask anyone specifically if they've been ticketed.
I might just walk up to a highway patrol officer and ask him.
I don't have an avatar yet. Those mesh gates look pretty good though and i assume it takes a couple of pounds off the vehicle weight.

Well, I can tell you one wives tale. Driving with your tailgate down doesn't save you any gas. I think your truck actually produces more drag that way than with the tailgate up.

You can buy tons of illegal car parts in Cali... companies will sell anything that people will buy, ya know?
I don't think you'd get a ticket for a tailgate net.
