Well, Chevy finally let the cat out of the bag on the rumor that everyone's been anticipating for the past year and a half. The 5.3L V8 will be offered as an option on the '09 Colorado. As installed in this application, it puts out 300 hp and 320 lb./ft. of torque. It is available only with the 4L60 automatic, and only in extended and crew cab models.

Cool idea, but I wonder what kind of mileage it's gonna get. Too bad it's coming out just as gas prices are approaching $5 a gallon. I don't know if it's a matter of packaging or not, but I'm wondering if it would get better mileage with a 6-speed auto. Also, anyone know if it's going to have cylinder de-activation?

Yeah, I think I read in the release that they're saying it'll do 0-60 in "under 7 seconds." Also, you get a choice of a 3.42, 3.73 or 4.10 rear end.

I don't know. I still think I'd prefer a turbodiesel V6 to a 5.3, with the way fuel prices are going. Sure, diesel's a little more, but they get a LOT better mileage than an equivalent gasser. Guess we'll have to wait & see.

A V8 Colo would definitely be fun as a "toy" truck, but I don't know if I'd want it as a daily.

a V8 won't save the Colorado...in fact, I think that's moving in the wrong direction for that truck, or for any truck, with gas the way it is.
anyone missing mini trucks yet?

A blown V8 Colorado would be insane. I'll bet you we're going to see a few at SEMA this year.

Sure they might be giving a v-8 to the colorado, but why NOW? Why NOT a v8 in the s-10s & s-blazers, and continue it into the colorado when gas hadnt kaboomed yet? Ima kinda pissed that the blazer i love is stuck with (i dont have nearly the cash for an engine & tranny swap (the factory 4x4 4spd auto is a worthless piece , need a 5 or 6spd manual 2wd))a big v6 that makes no power for the size it is & the mileage it gets. Good for new owners , but it kinda burns s-10, blazer, & older colorado owners by givin the v8 they SHOULD HAVE HAD ALREADY into '09 & laters ! Any other aforementioned truck/suv owners kinda annoyed at this?

But ain't it always the case that almost as soon as you buy something, there's something even better that just came out? That's happened with me several times. I've learned if there's something out there you like, go for it, because other than the engineers working on the stuff, nobody really knows what's going to be out 2-3 years down the road.

It will not have DOD. The mpg I saw on the sport edition crew cab was 16/21.

Depending on the options you pick you can spend up to 32,000 on this truck( Z71 4x4 crew cab with all the bells and whistles). Putting a diesel would only make the truck more expensive. The mpg is not that bad as it is. You can expect 20-21 on the highway. I drive a 05 with 3.5l I5 and get 22-23 on the highway. I agree that a turdodiesel would be cool, but at what cost.

Actually, according to fueleconomy.gov, the 2WD Colo V8s get 15/21, and the 4x4s get 14/19. Still not awful. Not great, but not awful.
