I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota 5.2 V8. I have highway gears in it (I think 3.11s or something) and I drive all city so I was wondering what gears I should get for it. I was thinking 3.90s or 4.11s or possibly  4.56s. I am really confused on what I should get because some people say that if your driving city that you will get higher gas mileage with higher gears and some say lower. I am more worried about acceleration than gas mileage.

Thanks a lot for your help

Are you unhappy with the current acceleration? Generally, taller gears will give you better fuel economy. 4.56s are really short, unless you have larger-than-stock wheels and tires on it. I'd think a good 3.55 or 3.73 would give you a happy compromise between around-town responsiveness and highway fuel economy. Hope this helps.

Well I do not drive on the highway much and i have 16" rims instead of the stock 15s. So would 3.73 be okay on gas for the city. I am getting 9 mpg right now (inefficient 318) so its not a big deal i just want a lot of acceleration.

Well, shorter gearing would definitely improve your acceleration, but your mileage would probably go to pot.

if your truck is going to be left stock ten 3.91's from the factory if you're gonna lift it with bigger wheels then do th 4.56's
