WHY shouldn't cummins offer FORD the option to drop a 6.7 cummins in the SUPERDUTY???

Yeah it would be great to have a Cummins in a Ford. I guess it's do able thanks to companies like Destroked, but I think it would be even cooler if the boys at GM and Ford realized the advantages of the Cummins, or for that matter most Inline diesels. Say for example an Inline Cat in a Ford, and a Detroit in a GM. That would be pretty sweet. The Toyota 1 Ton Concept, that's not really a concept that was in Motor Trends/Truck Trends would be a pretty big competitor with the 8.0l Hino Diesel, if they decided to build it.

Help! Does anybody have the dry weights of all 3 diesels?  I think that the Duramax may be the lightest because of the aluminum heads but I still would like to know the exact weights.  I am putting a diesel in my 1963 Ford Galaxie.  Any buddy have a clue?  I would love to keep it all Ford but that Ford diesel is heavy.

So why would I do this?  Some buddy put one in a 65 Impala and with 800 HP and still got 30 MPH.  I want that!  Those old cars may be heavy but compared to the diesel trucks, they are still considered light.

I think your best bet will be a 4bt, cause a 7.3 will weigh like 989 pounds, that is real heavy for a little falcon

i have to also agree the 6.0 sucks which doesnt surprise me. if you think about it all powerstrokes suck they sucked when they came out, they sucked then, they suck now and theyll suck until someone gets smart and finally puts ford out of their misery.Duramaxs are good trucks dont get me wrong but you cant compare to the cummins sure specs say that the duramax runs a faster quarter mile but what you have to see is the test consists of a chevy running the allison auto and the dodge with the six speed which is always slower on the strip. you average losing 5 percent of horses to the rear wheels. noone can compare to the cummins power. ford tries to keep upping the displacement, theyve added twin turbos they keep doing these things that keep raising the price up and up and up but the fact is it isnt gonna work nothing that comes out with that ugly oval on it will ever be worth a dime. when ford guys see their lil truck get smoked over and over they say well when ford starts makin their own motors nobody can touch them NO FIGURE IT OUT ford dosnt know how its not in their ability theres a reason they dont make them now. if you own one of those ugly outcast ford trucks i feel sorry for you. if only you had a cummins...

Actually...none of the big 3 make their own diesels....

Powerstroke (Navistar/IH) Duramax(Isuzu) Cummins(Cummins!)

Ford actually had a good diesel the 7.3L than they replaced it with the 6.0l and it all went down hill... Chevy has never really had a great diesel the currnet D-maxes are probably the best engine they have had since they used the Detroits back in the day..(aside from the Olds 350 diesel....hehe) But Dodge seems to always have the top spot with the Cummins.

But there are ways Ford and GM and maybe even foriegn companies could compete with Dodge...If Ford gave in and used a Cat inline they may have a chance to knock Dodge down a notch or even an IH inline if they didn't have all the legal issues going on, or if GM used a Detroit or an Isuzu inline, they could have something...Even the foriegn truck companies have some strong engines too...Toyota has Hino Diesels which would be a great choice, and Nissan has some bigger diesels of thier own too..

personally i think the gm duramax takes the cake as the most reliable and best bang for the buck. yes they have had problems but what maker doesn't when they design a new platform. two of my close friends drive a cummins and a powerstroke and they have both been back to the dealer for grenading transmission parts. so far the duramax has only been back for a wheel bearing and steering column recall. the dodge has been back 13 times in 12 months. the ford has been back 6 times for the same problem.

gasdragon36, to answer your question, I think the Duramax is probably the lightest of the current Big 3 diesels. A good friend of mine that's a mechanic and pretty knowledgeable about these things said the Dmax is close to the weight of the GM 8.1 Big Block. The Allison on the other hand...That thing is a hoss and a half. I wouldn't doubt it if the tranny weighed as much as the engine!

In terms of a swap candidate into a car, I'd say the Duramax would be the best because of its relatively light weight, smoothness and compact size.

now i think ill have to go with the duramax.I live in new orleans and  after hurricane katrina i started doing debris clean up and i do have to say that i put all three of the big diesels to the test. The company that i worked for had a 2006 dodge 1 ton with the cummins,a 2006 ford 1ton with the powerstroke and i had a cummins 1 ton until i lost the engine three different times to a 30,000 lb dump trailer full of mudd and debris. We also had an older 7.3 powerstroke.Like i said, these trucks got put to the test.I'm talkin 30,000lb or more trailors and 2 feet of mudd at the dump. After i seen my dodge and the company's dodge crap out more than enough times, i decided to try out the duramax. It had lots of power and definately outpulled ford and dodge.Towards the end of the clean up the only vehicles left were my duramax and the classic 7.3 powerstroke.Dodge didnt stand a chance, and neither did the ford 6.0.I think the problem is....most guys who buy diesels dont do hard enough work to realy put the trucks to the test.Of course they're all going to last if you pull your four wheeler around on a 14 ft single axle trailor.I did the real test and all i have to say is, that the new duramax and the old 7.3 were the only two left standing, and you couldnt put those trucks through anymore hell than we did.And sorry to burst the bubble on you dodge fans but ford actually owns and produces the cummins diesel.if you dont believe me then look it up i guess. Now after all of that said and done.I hope i dont offend anyone but I would buy ANY of those diesels before i'd buy a toyota, nissan, honda, etc.and before any of the toyota, nissan,or honda fans make a comment about an american vehicle also being made in china or japan. They're made in either the U.S. or Canada and not over seas, especially the gm trucks.
Thanks everyone for reading my book and i hope i didnt offend anyone.

That's a great testimonial. The conventional wisdom is that the Cummins is the real workhorse, but I've generally heard pretty good things about the DMax as well, with a few exceptions. The 6.0 Ford has had a lot of issues, but those old 7.3s seem to go forever with the right maintenance. Thanks for sharing.
