Who has the best diesel engine out currently? Ford? Chevy/GMC? Dodge? Sound off here!

I think I'd have to go with the Duramax. That engine is super-quiet, makes a ton of power, and is hooked up to the Allison, which is by far the best auto tranny option of any of the Big 3 diesels. I know the Ford guys are going to say "Power Stroke all the way!" But with all the problems the 6.0 had, they should be laying low. Other than shooting flames out the exhaust, the 6.4 looks like it might be OK.

As I have no experience with the Duramax I can't really comment on its performance and reliability levels. But as an ex Ford service advisor let me just say that for most every month a sizable portion of my paycheck came from the amount of money generated by repairs for their 6.0 liter diesel motor both under and outside of warranty. Most people who had the newer Ford diesel longed for the older model, which was far more reliable.

Balboa,

I think I'd have to agree with you about the 6.0 Power Stroke. That engine was a disaster from day one. Thankfully, other than the flame-shooting tailpipe, the 6.4 seems to be a much more reliable motor. The early Duramaxes had their problems, admittedly, but the LLY and later versions seem to have resolved the earlier issues.

NO YOU DIDN'T MEAN THAT,BECAUSE the CHEVY'S 6.2 and 6.5 DIESEL ENGINE were the worst engine ever!! DOES THAT MEAN YOU LAYED LOW UNTIL THE DURAMAX CAME OUT. THINK AND COUNT TO TEN BEFORE YOU POST !!!!

gunman, if you want to get really technical about it, the worst diesel in a FS pickup was probably the LF9 Oldsmobile 5.7L diesel GM offered before the 6.2. Other than being so gutless, they couldn't pull a tampon out of of a Vegas hooker, I don't remember them being that unreliable.

HEY truckmod, I'm looking for a truck right now. I'm non-bias, I test drove CHEVY 2500 with DURAMAX engine. It was fast and quiet, ride was very good, Interior looked good. Now what I don't like, IFS, ALUMINUM HEADS, grill and body plain to look at.

Gunman, Off-Road Unlimited makes a straight-axle conversion kit for the 3/4-1-ton GMs.

I think I saw on the site it's about $1,600. I think you have to buy a few other components yourself, but not all that bad, IMHO.

Honestly, the top diesel out there is the Cummins, which as you know is found in the Dodge fullsize line up. I have an '03 Dodge 3500, my nieghbor has an '08 Silverado 3500 with a Duramax...My truck out pulls his in an instant. Yes the Duramax maybe "fast" but it lacks in the torque department. My dad got a new '08 Dodge 3500 with the 6.7L, nothing compares to it. Think about it, in the DHRA the top draggers are Cummins. In truck pulls, the top pullers are Cummins... Chevy and Ford do not compare to Dodge. They maybe fancier but that doesn't make them a better truck. The Dodges are the most truck like of the Big Three. And as far as performance upgrades, the Cummins will take what ever you throw at it. The automatic behind it can take a beating, more of a beating than the others. My truck has the 6spd manual, which is amazing. My votes for the Dodges.

HI silent, Glad your happy with the DODGE, I like them alot. If only they can improve the interior, and put factory tires that can cover the gap in the wheel-well, Make the body look meaner & tougher. That would be my vote, But the new 2008 FORD SUPERDUTY has a great interior, Look's like a small rig, Watch the DVD that compare the CHEVY, DODGE and FORD. The FORD parts are thicker and bigger than the dodge or chevy. Now if FORD can get better MPG, and prove that the 6.4 PSD will last, then they will have a winner. The CHEVY interior was good, the DURAMAX is fast, CHEVY grill and body is ugly, ONSTAR is like having a COP in your truck, looking at your every move, you have to spend $1600 on solid axle, can't trust alumimum heads, What I'm trying to say is I like them all!! NO REAL WINNER

Yep. All of them have their positives and negatives. Too bad you can't get any of the engines in any of the bodystyles, kind of like how you build a big-rig.
