Running board step plate

I have a 1956 F100 and there are two step plates on thr running boards. My plates are at the end of the running board where the running board attaches to the rear fender. All the pictures I've seen have the step plate under the door. My plate is too long to install it there. Are there different size plates or do I need to bend the front lip up straight to make it fit?
